Put Some Respek on My Name
This was a talk that I gave at js.la back in 2019. In this talk, I go over many of the problems that occur when developers treat names differently from other strings in their application and/or when assumptions are made about what a valid name is.
My last name is atypical (outside of Ireland) in that it has an apostrophe and two capital letters. As a result, I am constantly running into bugs in software, sometimes even crashing the app entirely. My goal with this talk is to educate developers on how to handle names in their applications. Spoiler: The trick is not to handle them at all!
